WindWorks - Wind Data Logging System

Description

A USB based system for connection to the Vortex wind speed sensor and eVane wind direction sensor. Consists or a USB interface unit and software for Windows or MAC. The Software has a live display of wind speed and direction and can also log wind data to an Excel compatible data file.

Product

  • USB based interface unit and Windows/MAC software

  • For use with USB1.1 or USB 2.0
  • Software has live data display
    • Current wind speed
    • Maximum wind speed since last reset, as well as the time stamp when the max was recorded.
    • Average wind speed since the last Reset. The date and time of the last reset is also shown.
    • Minimum wind speed since last reset, as well as the time stamp when the min was recorded.
  • The live display also includes the following controls:
    • Reset Displays: to reset the Live Displays (not the data acquisition)
    • Data Log On/Off: to start and stop data logging.
  • Peak wind gusts are monitored at a constant rate of 1 Hz (once per second)
  • Log rate adjustable from 1 minute
  • Data files are created in ASCII format with time and date stamp
  • For use with the Vortex wind speed sensor (not included)
  • For use with the eVane wind direction sensor (not included)
  • The wind speed data logging software is compatible with PC’s running Windows® XP, 98, or 2000 and it is also compatible with MAC OSX.

Live Display

The live display provides a real-time readout of the following information:

  • Current wind speed

  • Maximum wind speed since last reset, as well as the time stamp when the max was recorded.
  • Average wind speed since the last Reset. The date and time of the last reset is also shown.
  • Minimum wind speed since last reset, as well as the time stamp when the min was recorded.

The live display also includes the following controls:

  • Reset Displays: to reset the Live Displays (not the data acquisition)

  • Data Log On/Off: to start and stop data logging.

Preference Screen

"Preferences" provides the following capabilities:

  • Units selection: mph, kph, knots, m/sec

  • Filename: the name and location of the data file
  • Interval: the number of minutes between stored data sets. It is also the interval over which the stored wind speed will be averaged - in minutes. (Note: this is not the same average as the Live Display, which averages over the entire time since the live displays were last reset).
  • Auto Log Start: enables the software data logging feature whenever the computer is turned on - automatically.
  • Coming soon: internet posting...

Data Files

The data stored includes the current speed, the max and min during the previous storage interval, the wind direction, and the average wind speed over the interval selected.

It is stored in ASCII format such that it can be read by virtually any graphing software. An example is shown here where the storage interval was one minute.

Stopping and starting the program APPENDS the new data and does NOT overwrite existing data.

Sensors

Vortex Wind Sensor

The Vortex Wind Sensor is a rugged, proven anemometer. Supplied without any electronics, the Vortex sensor is ideal for "do-it-yourself" projects of all kinds.

The Vortex Wind Sensor includes the following major items:

  • a high quality 3-cup rotor pressed on a stainless steel shaft

  • a rugged Delrin body with bronze and Rulon bushings
  • a flat aluminum mounting bracket with 2 holes
  • reed switch and magnet providing one pulse per rotation
  • 8m of exterior grade wire (user can extend)

Converting pulses to wind speed is simple using the following formula:

2.5 mph per Hz (1 Hz = 1 pulse/second)

Accuracy - 0.5 mph from 4 to 10 mph, +/-4% from 10 to 50 mph

eVANE Electronic Wind Direction Sensor

This electronic wind vane represents the latest technology in wind sensing: a balanced wind direction vane with a near-zero friction bearing and a high accuracy magnetic angle sensor to provide precision wind direction.

  • Balanced wind vane connected to an active, non-contact, zero friction Hall Effect sensor

  • Zero dead band. Many potentiometer wind vanes have a dead spot of several degrees. This device has no dead band at all.
  • Near-zero friction. Since the magnet is not in contact with the Hall sensor, there is no friction from the sensor.
  • Full 360 degrees
  • Virtually infinite life. Unlike potentiometers that wear out, the magnetic Hall sensor is non-contacting and should theoretically last forever.
