GigaLog8 - Compact Flash Data-Logger

Description

GigaLog is a stand alone data logger which stores data onto a PC compatible Compact Flash memory card. GigaLog can record data from 8 analogue, digital or pulse counter inputs or it accept RS232 data presented to via it's RS232 port. Memory capacity is determined by the size of the CF card installed, and can be up to 2GByte in size. Supplied with the GigaTerm configuration utility and GigaData data analysis package.

For a 16-bit model please see the Gigalog16 >>

Inputs

Analogue

The GigaLog datalogger has 8 inputs which can be either analogue or digital. The analogue inputs accept 0-2.56V as standard with a 10-bit resolution. However, there are on-board signal conditioning components which can be used for different signal inputs.

For 4-20mA inputs, jumper "a" is made to introduce the dropping resistor "b". A Cermet Pot can be installed "e" to eneable 0-5V/0-10V (or any other range) signals to be accepted. There is also space for a RC filter "f + g" to be fitted for noisy signals.

Data can be recorded at up to 1 sample every 1 ms (1kHz)

Using the GigaTerm utility, it is possible to apply scaling and offest values to the raw analogue input so that data can be recorded in engineering units.

Digital

The 8 inputs can also be used as digital inputs: logic 0 is 0-0.8v while a logic 1 is 3.5V-5V. The digital input has an internal pull-up and so volt-free contacts can be simply connected to the input and 0V. A closed contact will register as logic 0.

Counter

The 8 inputs can also be configured as 32-bit counters. Inputs can be logic pulse or contact closure. The input needs to be greater than 1ms in duration. The maximum count frequency is 500Hz. Every write to the CF card resets the counter to zero.

RS232

All data presented to GigaLog from the serial RS232 interface will be stored on the CF card in a datafile. A data frame from the RS232 port is any consecutive data until there is a gap of at least 0.5 seconds. GigaLog can be configured to add a time stamp (yyyy:mm:dd hh:mm:ss) in front and/or at the end of a data frame.

Input RS232 data is required to be of the form 8 bits, no parity. Baud rates can be 300, 600, 1200, 2400, 4800, 9600, 19200, 28800, 38400, 57600 and 115200. Data can be transferred ignoring flow control up to 115200 baud.

Construction

All I/O signals and Power are attached via screw terminals. The GigaLog has a standard 9-way D-type RS232 port. A 16 x 2 line LCD displays the state of the unit. For incoming RS232 data, the number of bytes received in last frame and total number of bytes in the file is displayed. When sampling analogue data, the display shows the raw input values, and the total number of bytes in the file.

A box mounted toggle switch starts/stops the logger, and a red LED shows CF write activity

Software

The GigaLog is supplied with 2 applications;

  • GigaTerm - a terminal program that can be used to configure the logger

  • GigaData - a data download and data display program

GigaData displays the recorded data in a chart display. All 8 channels can be plotted, and each channel can be given a name with a different identifying colour or trace style. The program has zoom and magnify functions and report print-out capability.
